How to Change Your Computer Name in Windows 7

Each computer on a network must have a unique name so that Windows networking knows how to address and find a particular computer. You are asked when you install Windows 7 for a name for your computer, though you may want to change the computer name at a later date. If you have mapped any resources such as drives or printers on other computers to the computer you want to rename, the old links will not work – you must use your new computer. Also, if you’ve joined your computer to a networked Windows Active Directory domain and you rename it (likely only in a business environment), you will need to rejoin it to the domain or you might have networking problems. If you would like to rename your computer in Windows 7:

  1. Click on the Start menu.
  2. Right-click on Computer and select Properties.
  3. The System control panel will open, scroll down to the Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings area.
  4. Click on Change settings.
  5. Click on the Change button.
  6. Change your computer name and then click OK.
  7. You must reboot for the name change to take affect.
