Each computer on a network must have a unique name so that Windows networking knows how to address and find a particular computer. You are asked when you install Windows 7 for a name for your computer, though you may want to change the computer name at a later date. If you have mapped any resources such as drives or printers on other computers to the computer you want to rename, the old links will not work – you must use your new computer. Also, if you’ve joined your computer to a networked Windows Active Directory domain and you rename it (likely only in a business environment), you will need to rejoin it to the domain or you might have networking problems. If you would like to rename your computer in Windows 7:
- Click on the Start menu.
- Right-click on Computer and select Properties.
- The System control panel will open, scroll down to the Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings area.
- Click on Change settings.
- Click on the Change button.
- Change your computer name and then click OK.
- You must reboot for the name change to take affect.
