How to Change CD Autoplay Settings

When you insert a CD or DVD disc into your drive, Windows has to decide if it should take some action on that disk: should it auto-start some software program, should it open the files in Explorer view, should it ask you what to do, or should it just ignore it and let you access the drive as you desire? Some software programs, such as virtual machines, must have autoplay turned off to function properly. If you install a new DVD player software, you may want it to start instead of Windows Media Player, and so on. Learn how to change the CD AutoPlay settings in Windows 7:

  1. Click on the Start menu and select Default Programs.
  2. Click on Change AutoPlay settings.
  3. The AutoPlay control panel provides you the settings and options for each type of autoplay circumstance.
  4. At the top, if you uncheck Use AutoPlay for all media and devices, you will disable AutoPlay completely on your machine.
  5. For each option, you have a pull down menu allowing you to select a default program (such as Windows Media Player) or a default action (such as Open a Folder in Windows Explorer). You can also select Ask me every time to be asked what to do, or Take no action to have nothing occur.
  6. Once you have selected what you would like to occur for each instance, click Save to save your settings.
