Project 2007 Menus: File Menu – Save Project Plan

The menu system is a familiar way to access commands, functions, and settings in Microsoft Project 2007. The File menu contains the actions and settings associated with project plans and the application.

The File menu is where you go to create, save, and close project plans. You can also print or set print options in the File menu. The File menu in Project contains the Send To submenu, allowing you to send the file to another application for processing (such as email). You can change document properties. Finally, you can Exit the program. In this Reference note, we’re going to review the Save and Save As… options.

File… Save

Saving a file is recording it to your hard drive or other removable storage. When you save a file, you are retaining the changes you make to the file. For a new file, this could be the first time you are saving it. Once you save it once, every time you select Save, the changes are recorded in the same file you saved previously. If you’d like to retain the original file and make a new file, you select Save As….

After we create a new file, we are going to Save it. Click File and then select Save.

The Save As dialog box pops up as we have not save it yet. Navigate to the folder you want to save the project plan in and then name your project.

If you select the Save as type menu, you will see there are several options we can use to save this file in a format different than our standard Project format. Since we are saving this as a project, we will leave it as Project. Click the Save button to save the file.

Save As… works just as described in this initial save of this new file. In the future, if you wanted to save the file as a different name, you can select Save as, rename the file, or change it’s location. You can also use Save As… to save the file in a different file format such as Microsoft Project 2000-2003 for users of older versions or Microsoft Excel Workbook for users who do not have Microsoft Project installed.
