Grouping and Ungrouping Shapes in Visio

As you build more complex drawings, you will find it useful to group “like” shapes. This allows you to control all of the objects as if they were one – moving around the group, aligning them, whatever is needed to control a group of shapes.

How to Group Shapes in Visio

  1. Select the shapes you’d like to group.
  2. Select the Shape menu.
  3. Select Grouping.
  4. Select Group.

How to Ungroup a Group in Visio

  1. Select the group you’d like to ungroup.
  2. Click the Shape menu.
  3. Select Grouping.
  4. Select Ungroup.

Ordering Shapes

If you are placing shapes on top of one another in a drawing, you can change the order of the objects.

  1. Select the object that you’d like to move up or down in order.
  2. Click on the Shape menu.
  3. Select Order.
  4. Select whether to bring the shape to front – placing it on top of all other shapes, send it to the back – placing it beneath all of the shapes, bring forward one step, or send backward one step.

Flipping Shapes

You may think a shape would be better facing the other way – or upside down! Either way, flipping a shape is a cinch in Microsoft Visio 2007.

  1. Select the shape you’d like to flip.
  2. Select the Shape menu.
  3. Select Rotate or Flip.
  4. Choose Flip Vertical or Flip Horizontal to flip the shape.

Centering a Drawing

Once you’ve created your masterpiece, you probably want to center it on the page.

  1. Select all of the shapes on the page.
  2. Select the Shape menu.
  3. Click on Center Drawing.
