How to Waterproof Your Basement?

Are you a do-it-yourself kind of person?  Then, a quality water-proofing coating may be all that you need.  First, wire-brush your walls to remove contaminants and patch floor and wall joints, cracks, and holes with quick dry cement.  Apply a waterproofing coating at the spread-rate specified by the manufacturer and work the coating into the masonry pores.  It can take up to 50 hours and three coats of waterproofing to waterproof the basement of a 2,500 sq. foot colonial.

If your water problem is severe, ask a pro to inspect your basement and discuss what is causing the problem and the best solution. Professional solutions may involve excavating the foundation walls, inserting an interior drain inside the perimeter of the home, or installing a multi-step foundation drainage system.

If excavating, have the contractor hand-excavate your home's walls - it's much safer for your home.  Include in the contract a landscaping provision.  The provision should state that full payment will be made when planting beds are restored to their original appearance, including the replacement of any plants that die.

Have a contractor install a subfloor if your ultimate goal is to finish the basement to create more living space for your family.  A subfloor will not only guarantee that the floor is dry, safe, and ready for carpeting or tile, it will feel better against your feet, too.
